Have you ever seen a commercial photography with that golden sun over the sea, the whole photo being painted in gold tones, and deep shadows? Yep that’s it. We all know the golden hour. Like the blue hour, it happens twice a day just after sunrise and before sunset. It can last one hour or more!
This can be a very creative moment using the sun as back light to create silhouette pictures, for example. The sun will be very low and the shadows will be very deep. The dynamic range will also be…huge! You might think, well I will have enough time to shoot in these conditions. Well, yes but everything will be very challenging as the lighting conditions are quickly changing, you will have to play a lot with your settings. Sure, it’s a good time to capture magical, unique portrait picture, especially here in Barcelona! Trying to use a fill light will be more difficult as the angle will be very low. You could also create dramatic portraits, exposing for the golden background and filling your model with strobe light.
